I have always listened to people during my life, specially the ones I admired. The only problem I found by doing that; is that I was probably ignoring myself by listening to others.
Here's a good example:
Since I was a kid, I loved art. I can clearly picture myself saying that I wanted to learn how to paint and be a famous artist. However, it wasn't valued between adults. The cool thing was to be a doctor, an engineer or maybe a lawyer. Artists can't make money in Brazil (another thing I have been told).
My dream got faded away and little by little I stopped drawing, put my colored pencils away and started studying to be a bioengineer. I went to one of the best universities in my country. I studied for 5 years and had nice grades but I noticed that it always felt like an obligation to me.
I never felt happy or read about bioengineering because I wanted. It was always because I had to. But..... Why did I have to??????? Nobody directly obligated me but it was on my subconscious mind.
YES! THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED. Just by listening to people's opinions that sticked to my head and I started acting towards it. But.. How did you get away from it?
I literally went away, moving to the United States, aiming to improve my english. Here, the story began again. I was extremely stressed studying biotech and taking care of kids (I was an aupair) and then I decided to draw, because it'd be relaxing.
I DECIDED TO DRAW BECAUSE THAT MADE ME FEEL GOOD. I HAD TO MOVE TO ANOTHER FCKING COUNTRY WHERE I WOULDN'T FEEL JUDGED. I HAD TO FCKING GO AWAY TO FIND MYSELF, BECAUSE I WAS ALWAYS BUSY CARING ABOUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE WOULD THINK.
Now, I decided to start a business with my art. I read about it when i don't have to. I design new things because that brings me fulfillment. I'm not told to; I don't feel like it's an obligation and it brings me happiness.
The feeling of listening to yourself and your own instincts is unbelievable. But you gotta be careful... Sometimes people are too loud. Tell them to shut the f*^k up and listen to yourself. That's the person who knows what is best for you.
When you make the ones around you happy; it makes you happier. You improve your life by improving the life of the ones around you. Another point to consider is that it's not even that hard; happiness lies in the small details.
I created these designs because I was feeling something inside that I wanted to express outside.I wanted someone to see the bags and have a reaction, wanted them to feel something new (get happy or weirded out, etc.) but getting the energy MOVING nonetheless.
The bright side of COVID-19 was being obligated to find joy in the unusual. COVID took restaurants away so you could find new trails.COVID took your suitcase away so you could fill your backpack up with new and meaningful experiences.
